Notion AI Review 2026

Workspace AI bundled on Business and Enterprise, with Custom Agents on credits

Notion AI is the assistant you buy when Notion is already the operating system for docs, tasks, and wikis. Full Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes, and Enterprise Search are bundled into Business and Enterprise. They are not a $10 add-on on Plus. Free and Plus get a limited trial. Custom Agents are a second product: free to try, then $10 per 1,000 monthly Notion credits, metered on top of the seat. Workers (beta) are free to try now and start using credits on October 15, 2026. Business is $20 per member per month on yearly billing. Plus is $10. Enterprise is custom. Skip Notion AI if your knowledge lives in other tools, or if you need a public website support agent. That job is Chatbase.

Is Notion AI the right fit for your team?

Judge Notion AI by the cleanliness of your workspace, not by a model brand. If pages are a mess and permissions are open, Agent and Enterprise Search will amplify the mess. This review is for teams already standardized on Notion who need a clear picture of what is bundled versus what is credit-metered.

  1. 01
    Shortlist when

docs, tasks, and meeting notes already live in Notion, and you want Agent, search, and (separately) Custom Agents in that same permission model.

  2. 02
    Validate before buying

run Agent on your real messy databases, audit sharing before turning on Enterprise Search, and forecast Custom Agent credits from the credits dashboard rather than guessing.

  3. 03
    Compare against

ChatGPT or Claude if work is not in Notion, Perplexity for cited public-web research, Cursor for code, and Chatbase for a public support widget.

Is Notion AI worth it?

Yes when Notion is home base. As of August 19, 2026, notion.com/pricing shows yearly billing as the default: Plus at $10 per member per month, Business at $20, Enterprise custom. The same page advertises up to 20% savings with yearly billing and offers a monthly toggle. Confirm the monthly card in-product. The AI matrix on that page is explicit: Notion Agent (chat, generate, autofill, translate), Meeting Notes, and Research mode are a limited trial on Free and Plus and included on Business and Enterprise. Enterprise Search is a Business/Enterprise item. Custom Agents require Notion credits on every listed plan after the trial. Core Notion AI is included with Business and Enterprise per notion.com/product/ai.

Best for internal operators, PMs, and knowledge teams. Poor as the only customer-facing support channel. Information architecture quality often matters more than which LLM the Agent is calling this month. Notion is model-agnostic in its own marketing: you can switch providers without losing workspace context. That only helps if the underlying pages are true.

How we evaluated this

We scored Notion AI as a workspace layer, not a standalone chatbot. Weights: plan gates (trial versus bundled AI), credit honesty for Custom Agents and Workers, permission safety, agent governance, and fit versus general assistants. On August 19, 2026 we read the official pricing page, the Notion AI product page, Custom Agents and credits help, and Workers pricing help. We did not inventory a customer workspace or measure credit burn on a production Custom Agent fleet.

Cost model

Business is the AI gate. Custom Agents are a credit meter

The retired $10 per-user AI add-on is gone. Buyers who still model “Plus plus $10 AI” will under-buy. Full Notion AI (Agent, Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search, Research mode) sits behind Business at $20 per member per month yearly, or Enterprise at custom. Free and Plus only include a limited trial. That is a seat-plan decision, not a toggle.

Custom Agents are a different SKU. They run on schedules or triggers, across the workspace and connected tools, whether you are online or not. Official pricing: free to try, then $10 per 1,000 monthly Notion credits. Credits reset monthly and do not roll over. The free-unlimited window for Custom Agents on Business and Enterprise ended May 4, 2026. Today they consume credits. If credits run out, agents pause. Workers (code-based agent tools, still beta) stay free until October 15, 2026, then they also draw credits. Notion’s Workers help page quotes about $0.0023 per run, or roughly 4,348 runs per 1,000 credits. That is cheaper than Custom Agents because Workers are not billed as full AI decision-makers.

  • Price the workspace first. 25 people on Plus yearly is $250 per month without full AI. The same 25 on Business is $500 per month with Agent included.
  • Then forecast Custom Agent credits. 10,000 credits in a month is $100 on top of seats. 50,000 is $500. Put a named owner on that line.
  • Do not turn on org-wide Enterprise Search before a sharing audit. AI will surface pages that “everyone” can already see, including pages nobody meant to publish.
  • Guests are free. Members are paid. Adding contractors as members to “just try Agent” is how Plus and Business bills jump mid-cycle. Notion prorates added seats.
  • Students and educators can get Plus (1-member limit) free with a school email. That does not give a company Business AI.

Worked example, yearly Business rates, USD, before tax: 40 members × $20 = $800 per month ($9,600 per year) for bundled Agent, Meeting Notes, and search. If Custom Agents use 20,000 credits per month, add $200. Workers after October 15, 2026 add whatever their runs cost at the published credit math. Peak-month model should assume a launch week that doubles agent runs, not the quiet week of the demo. Compare that total with 40 ChatGPT Business Standard seats at $20 ($800) plus a separate wiki you will still have to search. If Notion is already the wiki, the doubled tool is the waste.

Who Notion AI fits best

Strengths

  • AI where the work already is: pages, databases, wikis, and meeting notes, with the same permissions as the rest of Notion.
  • Bundled Agent on Business/Enterprise: chat, generate, autofill, translate, plus Meeting Notes and Research mode. No separate $10 AI add-on.
  • Custom Agents for recurring team work (Slack answers, routing, updates) with an admin credits dashboard.
  • Enterprise Search across Notion and connected apps (Slack, Google Drive, GitHub, and others as enabled).
  • Enterprise controls: zero data retention with LLM providers, SCIM, audit log, DLP/SIEM connections, domain management, HIPAA language for Enterprise.
  • Model-agnostic positioning: switch models or providers without losing workspace context, per product copy.

Limitations to verify

  • Free/Plus AI is a trial. Do not staff production Agent on Plus.
  • Custom Agent credits are usage-based, monthly, no rollover. Unowned agents will pause or surprise finance.
  • Permission sprawl becomes AI sprawl. Search and Agent read what users can already see.
  • Not a public website support widget and not a full helpdesk. Pair with Chatbase or Intercom if customers need that channel.
  • Workers credit rates start October 15, 2026. A “free beta” today is not a 2027 cost.

Surfaces to verify

The primary surface is the Notion app. Connected tools matter for search and agents. This is not a WhatsApp support bot.

  • Web and desktop Notion apps: Agent chat, inline AI blocks, database autofill, page generation.
  • Mobile: confirm which Agent and Meeting Notes flows exist on your OS before promising field teams the same UX.
  • AI Meeting Notes: transcription and summaries in the workspace. Transcript deletion controls are an Enterprise admin item on the pricing matrix.
  • Enterprise Search and connectors: Slack, Google Drive, GitHub, and other premium connections on Business/Enterprise. Demo with your actual scopes.
  • Custom Agents: scheduled or triggered runs across Notion and connected tools. Admin gating for who can create them.
  • Workers (beta): custom code to build agent tools, sync data, and trigger workflows. Credits from October 15, 2026.
  • Public API, webhooks, automations: workspace plumbing, not a customer chatbot channel.
  • Slack: useful as a Custom Agent surface for internal questions. Not a replacement for a branded support widget.

Workflow and operating model

Day-to-day Notion AI is drafting and rewriting pages, autofilling database properties, summarizing meetings, and asking Agent to complete a multi-step task using workspace context. Quality tracks structure. Clean databases with real properties beat a dump of meeting notes. Autofill on a junk property just writes junk faster.

Custom Agents are the operating-model change. One person builds a repeating job. The team benefits while the builder is offline. That only works with: a named owner, a credit budget, a ban list (no irreversible actions without approval), and a pause button the admin actually uses. Notion says agents pause when credits run out. Treat that as an availability risk for anything customer-adjacent, even if the agent is “internal.”

  • Writing: AI blocks, translate, generate docs from messy notes.
  • Databases: autofill, formulas, subtasks, dependencies. Business adds granular database permissions, which you want before Agent can see rows.
  • Meetings: AI Meeting Notes, then human cleanup of action items into the tracker.
  • Search: Enterprise Search across permitted sources. Verify citations back to a page.
  • Recurring automation: Custom Agents on credits. Workers later for cheaper, code-defined runs.

Governance: decide who can create agents, which data classes they may read, and which actions need a human. Publish that in the same wiki the Agent will read. Irony is useful here.

AI capability inside the workspace

Notion Agent can create and edit pages and databases using workspace context and connected apps. That is powerful on a tidy wiki and dangerous on an open-by-default workspace. Research mode produces longer reports. Meeting Notes capture a transcript and summary. Autofill writes into properties. Inline AI blocks rewrite in place. Quality is mostly retrieval plus permissions, not model theater. Notion says you can switch models or providers. Do that in a pilot if a department has a model preference. Do not expect a model swap to fix contradictory pages.

Custom Agents are the always-on layer. They are not the same as clicking Agent in a page. They have triggers, they run when you are away, and they bill credits. Give them a human owner. If an agent posts to Slack from stale policy pages, you will spend the savings on corrections.

Feature areas to verify

On Business or Enterprise, with your real space: Agent chat and actions, inline AI, database autofill, Meeting Notes, Research mode, Enterprise Search and connectors, page verification badges, Custom Agent create/disable rights, credits dashboard, Workers (if you will still be on them after October 15, 2026), SAML SSO, granular database permissions, private teamspaces, and Enterprise-only zero retention, SCIM, audit log, and DLP/SIEM.

Analytics and operating visibility

Business includes advanced page analytics (viewers and editors). Enterprise adds workspace analytics, user-level views, and search analytics. For AI, the credits dashboard is the operating view: who ran agents, how many credits, which agent. Set a monthly credit ceiling in policy. Track pages and databases most touched by Agent. If the hottest pages are stale, you have a content problem, not an AI problem. Seat count without weekly Agent users is vanity.

Security, data handling, and compliance

Notion states AI will not use your data to train Notion models unless you opt in to a share request. Subprocessors are under contract not to train on customer data. Data in transit uses TLS 1.2 or greater. SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001 are claimed. GDPR and CCPA mapping is claimed. Enterprise adds zero data retention with LLM providers (30-day retention is the non-Enterprise default) and HIPAA language that relies on zero-retention APIs. Request the Trust Center packet. Do not skip a sharing audit.

  • Fix guest and “share to web” settings before Enterprise Search.
  • Limit who can create Custom Agents. Disable unused ones.
  • Enterprise transcript deletion and custom retention are admin work, not defaults you can assume on Business.
  • Agent can only be as private as the pages it can open. Row-level database permissions on Business exist for a reason.

What questions should you ask before buying Notion AI?

  • Which plan actually includes Agent, Meeting Notes, and Enterprise Search for our workspace?
  • What does the limited trial on Plus allow, and when does it throttle?
  • Who can create Custom Agents, and what is the monthly credit forecast?
  • What happens when credits run out: pause, auto-purchase, or silence?
  • Are sharing settings clean enough for search?
  • Which actions require human approval?
  • When do Workers start billing us (October 15, 2026 unless Notion changes it)?
  • Is customer content used to train models under our opt-in setting?
  • Does Enterprise zero retention apply to our region and subprocessors?

What red flags should you watch for with Notion AI?

  • Buying Plus and expecting full Agent because “AI is included now.” It is a trial on Plus.
  • Unknown sharing settings and then org-wide search.
  • An unowned catalog of Custom Agents with no credit alerts.
  • Treating Notion AI as the public support bot.
  • Ignoring the October 15, 2026 Workers credit date in a 12-month budget.
  • No owner for page hygiene. Garbage in, Agent out.

What are the best alternatives to Notion AI?

Notion AI is not listed as an alternative to itself. Pick by where the work already lives.

  • ChatGPTChoose ChatGPT when you need a general assistant and Work/Codex across many apps, and Notion is not the system of record.
  • ClaudeChoose Claude when the job is long-document reasoning or Claude Code, and you do not need the output to land in a Notion database.
  • PerplexityChoose Perplexity when the job is cited live-web research rather than wiki operations.
  • CursorChoose Cursor when the job is repo-aware coding, not workspace writing.
  • ChatbaseChoose Chatbase when customers need a website or messaging support agent. Notion AI is an internal layer.

Test in practice

What Notion AI needs to prove in a real workflow

  1. Audit permissions.Fix sharing on the top 20 pages and core databases before Agent or search.
  2. Pilot Business AI on one team.Five recurring workflows. Score time saved and rework.
  3. Forecast credits.Turn on one Custom Agent, read the dashboard for two weeks, then price $10 per 1,000 credits at peak, not at idle.
  4. Then expand.Only after a named owner, a credit ceiling, and a ban list exist in writing.

Claim and source ledger

What this profile is based on

notion.com/pricing and notion.com/product/ai checked August 19, 2026: Plus $10 and Business $20 per member per month on yearly billing, Enterprise custom, limited AI trial on Free/Plus, full Agent/Meeting Notes/Search on Business/Enterprise, Custom Agents at $10 per 1,000 monthly credits, Workers free until October 15, 2026. Security and Workers help pages for training, retention, and per-run math. Existing official YouTube embed.

What we did not verify

The public page did not always print both monthly and yearly dollar cards at once. We cite yearly as the default published numbers and note the “up to 20% yearly” toggle rather than inventing a monthly sticker. We did not measure credit burn on a real Custom Agent fleet, review Enterprise contracts, or audit a customer workspace’s sharing graph. Fair-use throttles are described qualitatively, not as a numeric quota.

How we scored fit

Editorial fit weights whether Notion is already home base, whether the buyer will pay Business for bundled AI, and whether Custom Agent credits have an owner. It is not a writing benchmark. Plus-only teams score as “trial, not deploy.” Business teams with clean permissions score as the intended buyer. Support-widget buyers are pointed elsewhere.

Should you choose Notion AI?

Choose Notion AI when Notion is already where work lives and you will buy Business (or Enterprise) for bundled Agent, Meeting Notes, and search. Budget Custom Agents at $10 per 1,000 monthly credits as a second meter. Budget Workers credits from October 15, 2026. Do not buy Plus expecting the old $10 AI add-on.

Skip it as a public support channel, as a general assistant for teams that do not use Notion, and as an ungoverned agent catalog. Clean the top pages first. Then run the four-step workflow test. Re-check notion.com/pricing during legal review.

FAQ

Common questions

Is Notion AI included or an add-on?

Core Notion AI (Agent, Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search, Research mode) is included with Business and Enterprise. Free and Plus get a limited trial. The old standalone $10 AI add-on is not the current packaging. Custom Agents are extra, billed in credits.

How much is Notion Business?

$20 per member per month on yearly billing on the official page checked August 19, 2026. A monthly toggle exists and yearly is advertised at up to 20% off. Confirm the monthly number in-product. Guests are free. Members are paid.

How do Custom Agent credits work?

$10 per 1,000 monthly Notion credits after the trial. Credits are a workspace add-on on Business and Enterprise. They reset monthly and do not roll over. If the balance is too low, agents pause until an admin adds credits. The unlimited free window ended May 4, 2026.

When do Workers cost money?

Workers are free to try on Business and Enterprise (including trials) during beta. Notion says they start using credits on October 15, 2026. Help copy lists about $0.0023 per run. Custom Agent actions already consume credits according to plan settings.

Does Notion train on our data?

Notion says it will not use your data to train its models unless you opt in. Subprocessors are contracted not to train on customer data. Enterprise offers zero data retention with LLM providers. Non-Enterprise default is 30-day retention with providers. Get the DPA in writing.

Can Notion AI replace a support chatbot?

No. It is an internal workspace layer. For a public site widget, use Chatbase or a helpdesk AI. A Slack Custom Agent that answers employees is not the same product as a customer inbox.

Notion AI vs ChatGPT?

Choose Notion AI when the system of record is Notion and you want Agent inside those permissions. Choose ChatGPT when people work across many apps and need Work/Codex. Some teams keep both: Notion for wiki operations, ChatGPT for general drafting outside the wiki.

Do Free or Plus include full agents?

No. They include a limited trial of Agent, Meeting Notes, and Research. Full packaging is Business and Enterprise. Custom Agents still need credits.

Who should skip Notion AI?

Teams whose docs are not in Notion, teams that need a customer-facing bot, and teams that will not clean permissions or own credit spend. Also skip Plus as a production AI plan.
